Hazelton is one of the oldest settlements in Northern British Columbia, with origins dating back to 1866. The village was the original gateway for the Omineca Gold Rush and maintains that history today.
Hazelton is has an incredible history going back thousands of years and this is expressed through the world-famous 'Ksan Historical Village and Museum. The museum, on the Skeena River, is a cultural center dedicated to illustrating the richness of Gitxsan culture and history. Hazelton is hub for Steelhead fishing. The Kispiox River is home to the largest steelhead in the world. Discovered 50 years ago, after sweeping the top places in the Field and Stream Magazine’s fishing contest the Kispiox River is now known world-wide for its fishing. That contest started the surge of Hazelton’s tourism industry, and now travelers from all around come to Hazelton each fall trying to catch the next great Steelhead.
Hazelton is home to about 300 people, and there are over 6000 people living in the surrounding area. The town is located at the junction of the Bulkley and Skeena Rivers in northern British Columbia, Canada and is on the northernmost point of highway 16. Northwest Community College was established originally in Terrace in 1975, but has since expanded into many communities, including Hazelton. NWCC specializes at training individuals to succeed in Northern communities and offers courses in business, health, arts programs, and trades.
